2012-2021 Kia Soul engine problems: which program fits your engine
Short answer
The Soul has more engine programs than almost any other model in our guides. The 2012-2016 Gamma 1.6L GDI and the 2014-2019 Nu 2.0L GDI are on Kia's Engine II settlement list (15 years / 150,000 miles for connecting-rod bearing damage, KSDS first). The 1.6L also has a catalytic-converter recall (19V-120) because overheating can damage pistons. The 2020-2021 2.0L Nu MPI has piston-oil-ring recalls (21V-259, and 25V-099 for certain 2021s). And most 2011-2019 Souls can't take the anti-theft software, so Kia offers an ignition cylinder protector instead.

Which engines and years are involved
- 2012-2016, 1.6L Gamma GDI: Engine II settlement; catalytic converter / piston recall 19V-120.
- 2014-2019, 2.0L Nu GDI: Engine II settlement. For 2014-2016, Kia's KSDS campaign letter also promises a 15-year / 150,000-mile long-block warranty for connecting-rod bearing damage once KSDS is done.
- 2014-2015 Soul: engine-compartment fire recall 20V-750 (inspection plus KSDS update).
- 2020-2021, 2.0L Nu MPI: piston oil ring recall 21V-259; certain 2021s also in 25V-099.
- 1.6L turbo: not on the Engine II list.
What the settlement, campaigns and recalls say
KSDS (Knock Sensor Detection System) is free dealer software that listens through the knock sensor for the vibration pattern of a worn connecting-rod bearing. If it hears it, it turns on the check-engine light and limits engine power so the car can be driven to a dealer instead of the engine failing on the road. Kia's dealer letter names the trouble code P1326 for this condition.
- Kia Engine II settlement (In re: Hyundai and Kia Engine Litigation II, C.D. Cal., final approval April 2024): extends the powertrain warranty to 15 years or 150,000 miles from original retail delivery, whichever comes first, for short-block and long-block damage caused by connecting-rod bearing failure, for original and later private owners. The KSDS update has to be done at a Kia dealer first.
- Deadlines: cash claims (past repairs, towing, rental, fire losses) closed July 8, 2024. The extended warranty continues and needs no claim form. Kia's settlement site sometimes blocks automated visitors, so if it won't load, ask a Kia dealer to look up your VIN.
- 2014-2016 Soul 2.0 KSDS campaign: Kia's February 2024 renotice (code PI2002B on the letter) says the update is free, and that once it's done Kia warrants engine long-block repairs needed due to connecting-rod bearing damage for 15 years / 150,000 miles from the first date of service, for new and used owners. It warns that driving a long way in limp mode after KSDS triggers may void that extended warranty.
- Recall 19V-120 (2012-2016 Soul 1.6 GDI): dealers update the catalytic-converter overheating protection software, replace the converter if damaged, and replace the engine if needed.
- Recalls 21V-259 and 25V-099: inspect, replace the engine if needed, and install piston-ring noise sensing (PNSS) software.
- Anti-theft: Kia's theft settlement notice lists the Soul 2020-2022 for the software and says 2011-2021 Souls (as a group) may not be able to take it. Those get Kia's CS2311 ignition cylinder protector. The multistate settlement site lists Soul 2020-2022.
Engine-related recalls
19V-120 · ENGINE
Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2012-2016 Kia Soul vehicles equipped with 1.6L Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engines. High exhaust gas temperatures may damage the catalytic converter, possibly resulting in abnormal engine combustion and damage to one or more of the engine's pistons and possible piston connecting rod failure.
20V-750 · ENGINE
Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2012-2013 Sorento, 2012-2015 Forte and Forte Koup, 2011-2013 Optima Hybrid, 2014-2015 Soul, and 2012 Sportage vehicles. An engine compartment fire can occur while driving.
21V-259 · ENGINE
Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Soul, and 2021 Seltos vehicles equipped with 2.0L Nu MPI engines. The piston oil rings may not have been properly heat-treated, which may result in engine damage.
25V-099 · ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE:HARD PARTS INTERNAL/MECHANICAL
Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2021-2023 Seltos and Soul vehicles. The piston oil rings may have been manufactured incorrectly, which can result in engine damage.

Source: NHTSA complaints API, pulled 2026-10-09. "Engine complaints" are complaints where the owner picked an ENGINE component (one complaint can list several components). Mileage is the median of mileages owners typed into their complaint text, shown only when at least 10 complaints mention one. Complaints are unverified owner reports, and counts reflect how many owners filed, not how many cars failed.
Engine complaints dominate: from 2014 on, about two-thirds to three-quarters of Soul complaints name the engine, and 2014-2016 also have the most engine fires in this table (57, 63 and 29). The mileage owners mention for 2012-2016 is high (roughly 80,000-100,000), which fits wear-related bearing and piston failures. 2020-2021 numbers are early-life complaints on a newer engine.
Warning signs to take seriously
- Flashing check-engine light with the car limited to low RPM: KSDS has detected bearing wear. Kia's letter says engine speed is capped around 1,800-2,000 RPM. Get it to a dealer promptly.
- Rattle from under the car, a sulfur smell, or power loss on a 1.6L: possible catalytic converter damage (19V-120).
- Oil use between changes or knocking on a 2020-2021 2.0L.
- Smoke or burning smell from the engine bay: stop, get out, call for help.
What to do, step by step
- Check your VIN at NHTSA and owners.kia.com for open recalls and campaigns.
- Confirm KSDS is done on a 1.6 GDI or 2.0 GDI. It's free and both the settlement and Kia's 2.0 campaign require it.
- Keep oil-change receipts. Kia's letter says improper maintenance can affect the extended warranty.
- With symptoms, call a Kia service department with the VIN and ask which extended engine warranty is on file before paying for diagnosis.
- For theft protection, check customercare.kiausa.com/SWLD. If the software isn't available, ask for the CS2311 cylinder protector.
Questions
Is my 2015 Soul 2.0 covered if the engine fails?
The 2014-2019 Soul 2.0L GDI is on the Engine II settlement list, and Kia's 2014-2016 campaign letter promises a 15-year/150,000-mile long-block warranty for connecting-rod bearing damage once KSDS is done. Whether a specific repair qualifies is Kia's call, so confirm with a Kia dealer using your VIN.
What does recall 19V-120 fix?
On 2012-2016 Soul 1.6 GDI, high exhaust temperatures can damage the catalytic converter and then the pistons. Dealers update the software, replace a damaged converter, and replace the engine if it's damaged.
Can my 2016 Soul get the anti-theft software?
Kia's theft settlement notice says 2011-2021 Souls may not be eligible for the software. Those can get a free ignition cylinder protector (CS2311). Check your VIN at customercare.kiausa.com/SWLD.
Is the Soul turbo included in Engine II?
We didn't find the 1.6L turbo on the Engine II list, which names the Gamma 1.6 GDI (2012-2016) and Nu 2.0 GDI (2014-2019).
