2012-2021 Kia Rio: anti-theft options and recalls by year

Last reviewed 2026-10-09 · Data: NHTSA, official settlement and manufacturer documents · Independent site, not affiliated with Hyundai, Kia or NHTSA

Short answer

The Rio's issues in these years are mostly about theft and a handful of recalls, not engine failures. Kia's theft settlement notice lists the 2012-2021 Rio for the free anti-theft software, but also says some Rios can't take it; those get a free ignition cylinder protector (CS2311). The multistate settlement adds a zinc-reinforced protector and theft claims for 2012-2021 Rios. Recalls to check include an ABS module fire recall (2012-2017, park outside until fixed), a steering column bolt (2021-2022) and a brake master cylinder (2020-2021).

Source: NHTSA complaints and recalls APIs, pulled 2026-10-09. One complaint can name several components. The recall count is every NHTSA campaign listed for that model year, not only open ones. Complaints are unverified owner reports, and counts reflect how many owners filed, not how many cars failed.

The Rio draws far fewer complaints than the other models in our guides. 2013 has the most, and engine complaints are the most-named component in most years, but the raw counts are small (a few dozen per year), so a handful of reports can swing the percentages.

Signs to take seriously

What to do, step by step

  1. Run your VIN at customercare.kiausa.com/SWLD to see whether the software or the protector applies.
  2. Book it at any Kia dealer. It's free.
  3. Ask about the multistate zinc protector at the same visit.
  4. Check open recalls at NHTSA and owners.kia.com.

Questions

Can my 2014 Rio get the anti-theft software?

The 2012-2021 Rio is on Kia's software list, but the notice says some Rios can't take it. Run your VIN at customercare.kiausa.com/SWLD; if the software isn't available, ask for the CS2311 cylinder protector.

Can I still file a theft claim from the first class settlement?

That settlement's claim deadline was April 28, 2025. The multistate settlement covers qualifying thefts from April 29, 2025, while funds last.

Is the Rio engine in a settlement?

No. Neither engine settlement lists the Rio.
