2011-2019 Hyundai Sonata engine problems: what's covered and what to do

Last reviewed 2026-10-09 · Data: NHTSA, official settlement and manufacturer documents · Independent site, not affiliated with Hyundai, Kia or NHTSA

Short answer

If your 2011-2019 Sonata has the 2.4L or 2.0L turbo Theta II GDI engine, it is on the published class-vehicle list for the Theta II engine settlement. That settlement extends the warranty on the engine's short block to lifetime for vehicles owned by individual consumers, as long as the KSDS software update has been done by a Hyundai dealer. 2019 models count only if built before KSDS was added at the factory. The 1.6L turbo and the hybrids are not on this list.

Check your VIN to see recalls and which programs list your exact engine.

Which engines and years are involved

Your VIN's 8th character encodes the engine. Our checker decodes it with NHTSA's vPIC database; confirm against your registration or window sticker if the result matters.

What the settlement and KSDS campaign say

KSDS (Knock Sensor Detection System) is free dealer software that listens through the knock sensor for the vibration pattern of a worn connecting-rod bearing. If it hears it, it turns on the check-engine light and limits engine power so the car can be driven to a dealer instead of the engine failing on the road. Kia's dealer letter names the trouble code P1326 for this condition.

Engine-related recalls

  1. 15V-568 · ENGINE

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Sonata vehicles manufactured December 11, 2009, to April 12, 2012 at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama and equipped with either a 2.0 liter or 2.4 liter Gasoline Direct injection engine. In the affected vehicles, metallic debris may not have been fully removed during manufacturing of the engine crankshaft. If the debris was not completely removed, oil flow may be restricted through the connecting rod bearings, causing connecting rod damage. A worn connecting rod bearing will produce a metallic, cyclic knocking noise from the engine and possible engine failure.

  2. 17V-226 · ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2013-2014 Sonata and Santa Fe Sport vehicles. Machining errors during the engine manufacturing process may cause premature bearing wear within the engine.

  3. 18V-934 · ENGINE

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Sonata and 2013-2014 Santa Fe Sport vehicles previously repaired under recall numbers 15V-568 and 17V-226. The high pressure fuel pipe that connects to the fuel pump outlet may have been damaged, misaligned, or improperly torqued during the engine replacement procedure, allowing fuel to leak from the pipe.

  4. 20V-121 · FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2013-2014 Sonata vehicles. The low pressure fuel hose that connects the low pressure fuel pump to the direct injection fuel pump may crack over time due to heat generated within the engine compartment.

  5. 22V-312 · FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2013-2014 Sonata vehicles. The low pressure fuel hose that connects the low pressure fuel pump to the direct injection fuel pump may crack over time, due to heat generated within the engine compartment.

Source: NHTSA complaints API, pulled 2026-10-09. "Engine complaints" are complaints where the owner picked an ENGINE component (one complaint can list several components). Mileage is the median of mileages owners typed into their complaint text, shown only when at least 10 complaints mention one. Complaints are unverified owner reports, and counts reflect how many owners filed, not how many cars failed.

The pattern in the numbers: 2011 has by far the most complaints of any year here, and for 2015-2019 more than half of all complaints name the engine. The median mileage owners mention for engine problems is roughly 78,000-89,000 for 2011-2014. Most later years show lower numbers, but those cars are younger, so this says little about when an engine is likely to fail.

Warning signs to take seriously

What to do, step by step

  1. Run the free Hyundai Campaign 953 VIN check to see whether KSDS is still open on your car. If it is, book it. It's free.
  2. Run your VIN at NHTSA and Hyundai's open-campaign lookup for open recalls.
  3. If the engine is already knocking or the light is on, call a Hyundai dealer service department, give the VIN, and ask specifically whether the Theta II settlement lifetime short-block coverage or any open campaign applies, before agreeing to a paid diagnosis.
  4. Bring oil-change receipts if you have them.
  5. If you're told you're not covered and you think you are, contact the settlement administrator listed on the official settlement site.

Questions

Is my 2013 Sonata 2.4L covered for life?

It is on the published class list for the Theta II settlement, which extends the short-block warranty to lifetime for consumer-owned vehicles that have had the KSDS update. Whether a specific car is covered depends on things like KSDS status and how the failure happened, so confirm with a Hyundai dealer or the settlement administrator.

Does the 2015-2019 Sonata 1.6 turbo qualify?

Not under the Theta II settlement. That settlement lists only the 2.0L turbo and 2.4L Theta II GDI engines.

What is KSDS and is it free?

It's dealer software that detects early connecting-rod bearing wear and limits power before the engine fails. Hyundai installs it free under Product Improvement Campaign 953. It's also a condition of the settlement's lifetime short-block warranty.

Can I still get reimbursed for an engine I paid for years ago?

The settlement's reimbursement claim deadline was August 9, 2021. Ask the settlement administrator whether anything else applies to your situation.
