Does my Hyundai or Kia have an immobilizer? Turn-key vs push-button

Short answer

If your 2011-2022 Hyundai or Kia starts with a push button, it has an immobilizer and the anti-theft programs don't apply. If it starts with a metal key turned in the column, it may not. Hyundai's dealer bulletin says the quick test is: push-button start or an immobilizer light in the instrument cluster means it has one. Turn-key cars without that light are the ones targeted in the thefts that spread on social media, and they may qualify for free software, a cylinder protector or a steering wheel lock, depending on model and year.

Check your VIN to see which anti-theft lists your model year appears on. Then answer the turn-key question; a VIN alone can't show it.

How to tell in 30 seconds

  1. Look at how it starts. Push button: it has an immobilizer. You're done.
  2. Turn-key: turn the key to ON without starting and look for an immobilizer (key-shaped) light in the cluster. Hyundai's bulletin treats that light as proof the car has one.
  3. Still unsure: run the VIN at hyundaiusa.com/anti-theft or customercare.kiausa.com/SWLD. The official lookups know the build; model-year lists, including ours, don't.

Hyundai's bulletin also says immobilizers became standard on all Hyundai vehicles produced from November 2021.

What to do, step by step

  1. Check how your car starts and whether the immobilizer light shows.
  2. Turn-key without the light: run the official VIN lookup for your brand.
  3. Book the free software, or the protector or wheel lock if the software isn't available.
  4. Ask about the multistate zinc protector at the same visit.
  5. After the software update, always lock and unlock with the fob.
  6. If the car is stolen or damaged in an attempt, file a police report, then read the multistate settlement site for claim rules.

Questions

My Hyundai has push-button start. Do I need the anti-theft update?

No. Hyundai's bulletin says vehicles with push-button ignition or an immobilizer light already have an immobilizer, so the software doesn't apply. Some may show the campaign as open; a dealer can close it with an inspection.

Can the VIN tell me whether my car has an immobilizer?

Not reliably from a model-year list, which is why our checker asks how your car starts. The official Hyundai and Kia VIN lookups use build records.

Does the software work with my remote starter?

Hyundai's bulletin says it may conflict with aftermarket alarms and remote starters; owners can decline by signing an opt-out form. Ask the dealer before the update.

Is there still money for theft victims?

The multistate settlement pays qualifying theft claims from April 29, 2025 until the zinc protector is installed or March 31, 2027, while its limited fund lasts. The earlier consumer settlement's deadline was April 28, 2025.
