2011-2022 Hyundai Accent: anti-theft fixes and recalls by year
Short answer
The Accent's main problem in these years is theft, not engines. Turn-key 2018-2022 Accents without an immobilizer can get Hyundai's free anti-theft software (Campaign 993). 2011-2017 Accents can't take the software, so Hyundai offers a free ignition cylinder protector (Campaign 9A5) or a steering wheel lock (Campaign P32), per its May 2024 dealer bulletin. The Accent isn't on either engine settlement's class list.
Check your VIN to see recalls and which programs list your exact engine.
Which years get which anti-theft fix
- 2011 Accent (MC): cylinder protector (9A5) or steering wheel lock (P32).
- 2012-2017 Accent (RB): cylinder protector or steering wheel lock.
- 2018-2022 Accent (HC): anti-theft software (993) if the car has no push-button start or immobilizer light.
The bulletin also says Hyundai will reimburse owners of vehicles that can't take the software up to $300 for a different anti-theft device, and for a steering wheel lock (call Hyundai at the number in the bulletin).
Programs that may apply
- Campaign 993 (2018-2022): the software extends the alarm and won't let the car start until it's unlocked with the fob. Dealers put anti-theft decals on the front windows.
- Campaigns 9A5 and P32 (2011-2017): a steel ignition cylinder protector (with decals) or a steering wheel lock, free at a Hyundai dealer.
- Multistate settlement: the official site lists Accent 2018-2022 (free zinc cylinder protector; theft claims for qualifying thefts from April 29, 2025, while funds last). We didn't find the 2011-2017 Accent on that list.
- Earlier class settlement (hyundaitheftsettlement.com): its claim deadline appears to have passed. Check the official site before assuming either way.
Recalls worth knowing about
23V-651 (ABS module, 2012-2015 Accent among many models) comes with a park-outside warning in NHTSA's remedy text. The steering-column bolt recall (22V-311) affects 2021-2022 Accents and can cause a loss of steering.

22V-311 · STEERING:COLUMN
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2021-2022 Accent vehicles. A bolt in the steering column may not be secured properly, which can cause the steering column to detach from the steering rack and result in a loss of steering control.

Source: NHTSA complaints and recalls APIs, pulled 2026-10-09. One complaint can name several components. The recall count is every NHTSA campaign listed for that model year, not only open ones. Complaints are unverified owner reports, and counts reflect how many owners filed, not how many cars failed.
The Accent draws few complaints compared with the other models in our guides, and they're spread across components rather than piled on the engine. 2012 and 2013 have the most. The 2019 sample is small (31), but two-thirds of those name the engine, so watch for oil use or knocking on that year.
Signs to take seriously
- A broken steering column cover or a loose or punched ignition cylinder: the car may have been targeted.
- Steering that feels loose or disconnected on a 2021-2022 (recall 22V-311).
- A soft brake pedal on a 2021 (recall 21V-937, brake master cylinder).
- Burning smell or smoke from the engine bay with the car parked (ABS module recall).
What to do, step by step
- Run your VIN at hyundaiusa.com/anti-theft to see which anti-theft fix applies.
- Book the software, protector or wheel lock at any Hyundai dealer. They're free.
- Check open recalls at NHTSA by VIN.
- If your Accent was stolen or damaged in an attempt after April 29, 2025, read the multistate settlement site for claim rules. Funds are limited.
